Quartz is one of the most common minerals on Earth and is found in many different colors and combinations. Bi-Colored Quartz Beads are combinations of two different varieties of quartz, such as smoky quartz and citrine, amethyst and citrine or either of these minerals combined with clear quartz. Bi-colored quartz is rare in nature and most of these beautiful beads have been heat-treated to produce this fascinating effect. Because we buy beads in volume, we always have affordable beads in stock, making the Bead Traders the best place to find beading supplies online.

Ametrine

As its name implies, this gemstone is a combination of amethyst and citrine with a beautiful purple and yellow hue. Ametrine is also called bolivianite because it has been designated as the national gemstone of Bolivia, which is where most of the world’s supply of naturally-occurring ametrine is produced.

The color in both amethyst and citrine comes from iron impurities in the crystals. These bi-colored quartz beads are usually cut in a rectangle or other elongated shape with purple on one end and yellow on the other. Because of the crystalline structure of quartz, the emerald cut tends to show off the colors nicely. Natural bi-colored quartz gemstones that are cut to display equal amounts of the different colors on each end of the stone are the most valuable.

Smoky Quartz and Citrine

Smoky quartz is a translucent brown crystal that is sometimes mistakenly referred to as smoky topaz. Smoky quartz crystals can sometimes form along with citrine, which can be used to create bi-colored quartz beads that are brown on one end and yellow on the other.

Treated Crystals

Lapidaries have used heat, radiation and chemicals to alter and enhance gemstones for many years.Treatments can  change the color of gemstones, remove inclusions or fuse cracks in the stones. In the 1990s, scientists discovered that heat can be used to mimic the natural process whereby amethyst crystals become citrines. If an amethyst is heated to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, it will become a citrine.

This process can also be used to create bi-colored quartz beads. When one end of an amethyst crystal is heated to between 350 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit, it becomes ametrine, and the crystal will be purple on one end and yellow on the other.

Double the Properties

People who use beads for healing and metaphysical purposes believe that bi-colored quartz beads possess the qualities of both of the separate crystals. This means that ametrine beads, for example, would combine the properties of both amethyst and citrine. Amethysts are often used to increase mental clarity and bolster will power, especially for people who are battling addiction. Citrine is used to achieve balance and also to attract luck and wealth.
